Basmah Felemban at World Expo, 2025
At World Expo 2025, DDX produced a six-month cultural programme within the Saudi Arabia Pavilion, showcasing contemporary Saudi creativity through exhibitions, residencies and interactive experiences. As part of this programme, Basmah Felemban presented At the Surface of Water, a multidisciplinary project that merged sacred geometry with futuristic vision, inviting visitors to explore new intersections between tradition, technology and imagination.
The work drew audiences into immersive realms of space, ritual and rhythm. From intricate copperworks to stop-motion films and AI-generated dreamscapes, Basmah’s practice traced connections between deeply traditional and digitally experimental techniques, reflecting both the creative energy of Qiddiya and the growing global presence of Saudi contemporary art.
Throughout her residency, DDX supported Basmah in programming a computer-controlled drawing machine to produce new works, layering pieces with watercolour paint, and setting up her interactive artwork game, School as a Model, which proved highly popular. During live sessions, visitors witnessed the evolution of her work and engaged directly with her creative process.
At the Surface of Water transformed the Visual Arts Studio into a dynamic, immersive environment - where traditional techniques, digital experimentation and audience participation came together to create a unique and engaging cultural experience.
