The director of the Netflix livestream is a veteran of the Oscars and the Super Bowl.
If you haven’t heard of Hamish Hamilton, you are surely familiar with at least some of his work. The multiple-Emmy-winning British director has orchestrated some of the most-viewed shows on television, including the Oscars, Olympics ceremonies and Super Bowl halftime shows.
His next task? Delivering the K-pop boy band BTS’s comeback concert on Saturday from downtown Seoul to Netflix’s 325 million subscribers and the band’s global fan base.
Mr. Hamilton has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry: Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars. He says BTS is as big an icon as any of them.
“I genuinely believe this is every bit as significant as the Beatles arriving in America to a frenzied crowd in 1964,” Mr. Hamilton said in written responses to questions from The New York Times. “This is BTS in 2026 in Seoul; it’s going to be enormous, and I hope it makes its mark on pop-culture history.”
Mr. Hamilton has been a fixture of the broadcast industry for decades. After graduating from college in the 1980s, he first worked for the BBC in Scotland. Later, while working at MTV, he developed a talent for live concert broadcasts, aiming to make the music immersive for audiences that could not be in the room, he said.
