BAFTA TV Awards A Great Stride Forward for Virtual Events

"Ayoade called it the “most overproduced Zoom call in history” and while he’s not wrong, anyone who has ever tried to organise a meeting with over five people across various different time zones will know just how much planning and patience it takes. The result was a much more entertaining (and thankfully more swift) than the awards-show-by-numbers we have all got used to.

It was a joy to watch Craig Revel Horwood let off a party popper in his living room surrounded by disco balls; Romesh Ranganathan’s acceptance speech for his Features gong for The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganathan was nothing short of wonderous, complete with a tinfoil Mask award; watching Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Sian Clifford catch each other’s eye, knowing they were sat at the same kitchen table felt like being in a club every Fleabag fan longs to join.

The show felt more honest too, capturing the shock of a win on faces as soon as winners were announced, rather than allowing them to gather their thoughts on the walk to the stage. Oh, and the “accidental” catching of the Female Performance In A Comedy Programme in the middle of plucking their chin hairs."
